9 ORCA Records Downed at Junior Olympic Championships

Over the past two weeks, ORCA’s top swimmers have been competing in the SCS Junior Olympic Championships.  On the weekend of January 1st, Jennifer Davis, Jason Dinh, Brook Hayes, Jessie Hill, Tasha Mahshi and Chloe Regan competed in the 12 and younger championships, and this past weekend Kevin Fermin, Hailey Golden, Chandler Regan, Connor Regan, Lucas Spencer, Madison Tedesco and Kristopher Tierney competed in the 13 and older championships.

Six individual and three ORCA relay records were broken at the older championships.  Leading the way for ORCA was Lucas Spencer, who broke records in the 15-18 Male 50 Free (22.06), 100 Free (47.67), 200 Free (1:46.05) and 100 Breast (59.38).  Spencer’s performances in the 50 and 100 Free and 100 Breast brought him back to finals where he placed 13th, 9th and 4th respectively.  Spencer was also a member of the three relay records broken by the 15-18 men.  Joined by Kevin Fermin, Connor Regan and Kristopher Tierney, the foursome broke ORCA records in the 15-18 Male 200 M.R.(1:43.75), 400 F.R.(3:20.80) and 400 M.R.(3:46.19).  Breaking the other individual records for ORCA were Kristopher Tierney, who broke the ORCA record in the 15-18 Male 200 IM with a time of 2:01.60, and Madison Tedesco tied her ORCA record in the 15-18 Female 200 IM with an exact time of 2:15.81.  Other top performances from the meet came from Chandler Regan, who placed 14th in the finals of the 100 Breaststroke, and Hailey Golden who set personal best times in three of her six entered events.

On the weekend of January 1st, the younger swimmers also enjoyed success at their championships.  Establishing a short course Junior Olympic qualifying standard is no easy task, and it was great success to finally get another younger boy back into the championships, with Jason Dinh swimming in his first Junior Olympics.  It was also nice to see an ORCA relay team qualify for the younger JO’s, thanks to the success of the relay swimmers Jennifer Davis, Brook Hayes, Tasha Mahshi and Chloe Regan.  Hitting personal best times in their events at the championships were Brooke Hayes, who hit top times in three of her events, and Jessie Hill, who hit top times in four of her events.

Next stop for the ORCA swim team will be the season-ending JO Max Championships, to be held on the weekend of February 19th at Canyon High School, where they will try to better their 2nd place finish at last year’s championships by claiming their first 1st place title at the meet.
