ORCA Claims 11th Place Out of 50 Teams at Winter Championships
With
true team effort and great camaraderie, seventeen of ORCA’s top swimmers
competed this past weekend in the Winter Age-Group Championships (WAG) in
Las Vegas, Nevada, claiming 11th place over-all out of 50 teams from
Southern California and Nevada. Breaking 9 ORCA records along the way, ORCA
swimmers claimed three individual gold medals, three individual silver
medals and three individual bronze medals, with 26 over-all Top 10
individual performances. Two ORCA relays also claimed silver and bronze
medals.
The ORCA WAG Team members included Alex Castellanos (17), Kevin Fermin (17), Elle Gault (15), Hailey Golden (14), Brianna Hayes (15), Brooke Hayes (11), Jesse Hill (10), Danica Lambert (15), Tasha Mahshi (10), Courtney Nguyen (15), Chandler Regan (13, Chloe Regan (11), Connor Regan (16), Ryne Spejcher (17), Lucas Spencer (18), Madison Tedesco (15) and Kristopher Tierney (17). Making the trip with Coaches Mark Tierney and Jess Withey as chaperones for the team were Helen Hill and Krissan Gault.
Madison Tedesco led the way in scoring team points for ORCA with individual gold in the 400 IM (4:47.59), followed by silver medal performances in the 100 fly (1:00.91) and 200 breaststroke (2:32.25). Tedesco also claimed top-8 medals in two of her other three events, taking 5th in the 500 free (5:33.13) and 8th in the 200 IM (2:20.13). Tedesco was also part of the 15-18 female 800 free relay which took home the bronze medal and established a new ORCA record. On the relay with Tedesco were Danica Lambert, Elle Gault and Brianna Hayes.
Also taking home individual gold and silver medals was Chandler Regan, who claimed gold in the 13-14 100 yard breaststroke with an ORCA record setting time of 1:08.17. Regan also claimed a 2nd place silver medal with an awesome performance in the 200 breaststroke, establishing a new Sectional bonus cut of 2:32.02.
The individual gold medal for the men came from Lucas Spencer’s performance in the 100 yard breaststroke, setting a new ORCA record standard of 1:00.76. Spencer also claimed a bronze medal for his performance in the 100 fly (54.62), and he took home top-8 medals in the 100 free (4th place; 48.39), 200 free (7th place; 1:48.64), and 200 IM (6th place; 2:04.20). Spencer was also part of the men’s 15-18 200 Medley Relay which took home the silver medal. On the relay with Spencer were Connor Regan (back), Kristopher Tierney (breast), Spencer swam fly and Kevin Fermin (free).
Bronze medal performances were achieved by Brooke Hayes, 3rd place in the 50 freestyle (26.40), and Hailey Golden in the 50 free (25.54). Golden also placed 7th in the 100 free (55.96) and 8th in the 500 free (5:30.85).
Other swimmers returning to the top-10 finals for ORCA were Danica Lambert, 10th in the 200 Breststroke (2:43.39), Connor Regan, 9th in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.62 finals; 2:04.76 ORCA Record in prelims) and Kristopher Tierney, 4th in the 200 Breaststroke (2:21.35), 7th in the 400 IM (4:31.14 New ORCA Record), 8th in the 50 free (23.22) and 10th in the 100 free (50.16). Kristopher Tierney and Connor Regan also took home silver medals for their performance on the 200 Medley Relay, and Connor Regan also broke an ORCA record in the 500 freestyle for the 15-18 men, going a 5:08.49 in prelims.
Wrapping up the winter championship season are the Western Zone Sectional Championships to be held this Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, CA.
